Hi Neal,
I have not that much practical experience with coiling (I have just started
my third 'project'), but I know the theoretical side of it. A safety gap
can only do his job well if the filtering is adequate. If too much of the
RF energy from the Tesla coil is flowing back to the secondary of the neon
transformator it will fire the safety gap. My advise would be: look into
the different articles about the filtering subject on the mail-list and the
Tesla-ring.
