Primary shape

This is probably a dumb question, but which format is best for the primary - a
flat spiral or a saucer shaped one ?
All the old designs used to have flat primaries wound with copper or brass
strap, then the dish or saucer primary of tubing was in vogue, now flat coils
of tubing seem to be the go.
What is the reasoning behind this change, or is it just to avoid primary
strikes as streamers get longer and longer ??
