strange coil behavior
Original poster: "Metlicka Marc by way of Terry Fritz <twftesla-at-uswest-dot-net>" <mystuffs-at-orwell-dot-net>
hello all,
i have recently made some resonance measurements on several of y coils
for paul and the tssp project. in one coil that was sent to me by a
coiler (no names, you know who you is), this coil was built very well,
all windings very tight and coated with many coats of poly for a nice
finish.
the problem was that no matter what was tried, this coil just wouldn't
perform well at all.
in making my resonance measurements i found that this 4.5" x 30.5" 26g
coil would only give a resonation with a base fed frequency of 383khz
and the amplitude of the V rise was less then the amplitude of the input
signal.
after looking the coil over i saw that they had drilled two adjacent
holes at the top and bottom windings, then looped the wire through and
around these holes several times, then in for the base and topload
connections.
after cutting these loops out (not easy with all the poly) and unwinding
a full turn, this coil now behaves and performs properly.
so for all winding a coil, if you drill a hole through the form to run
the wires into the center for topload and base connections, DON'T loop
it around in a small coil fashion.
the only thing i can think of is that the little loops or small coil
maybe makes a little "choke" that inhibits hf actions?
anyone have any thoughts on this?
simple inspection, marc
ps. to the builder, i will send it back, it seems to be working well
now. good job on construction, beautiful coil.
