If it's pure hydrogen in the enclosure that the spark gap is in,
then it will not explode because there is no air for the hydrogen to
combust with. (2 H2 + O2 --> 2 H2O) That is why rockets have to carry
liquid oxygen as well as liquid hydrogen, as there is no oxygen out in
space.
You'd have to make sure the container didn't spring a leak, as that
would let oxygen in!
