Simon,

Forget threading through holes.  Instead, try this:

Carefully saw down the line of holes just above the midpoint.  You then just
simply snap the tubing into the holes.  Very simple, looks good, goes fast,
and has worked great for me.

You should first practice on some scrap material to figure out exactly where
to saw through the holes.  You want the slot into the hole to be slightly
smaller than the tubing diameter so you have to force (snap) the tubing into
the hole, and it can't pop out easily.  To be safe, cut up a bit higher than
needed, then you can file the slot opening wider if needed.
