Those differences are caused mainly because although a long coil -is- 
a transmission line, it is not an uniform TEM transmission line,
and also not a lossless line, of course. 
Using models that apply to simple lines is just a simplification, that
gives qualitatively correct results, but with signigicant quantitative
deviations here and there. Note that this has no relation to the idea
that a long coil is just a straight wire transmission line coiled. This
is well known to not work with any reasonable accuracy since Tesla's 
times.
