snip...

when i first got my NST I built a Jacobs ladder to find out how much voltage
and power i was playing with... i found that by having the electrodes at
about 15 - 25 degrees spread and a .25" gap at the bottom ( length of
electrodes were about 20 " with a .25" bottom gap with a 4-6" gap at top) i
got best results... if i spread the upper gap beyond 6", I found that the arc
would "hang" at the bottom and not move. If I gently blew on the arc upwards
it would then travel the length of the eletrodes to about half way and break.
Try experimenting with the upper gap ( closing it in a bit ).

If you really want AWESOME arcs get a polepig ( just today I got mine setup
and tested... started at .5" with 36" long electrodes with a 12" gap at top
.... the arcs "arched" upwards and continued at the top to about 16" dia.)
altho they looked fantastic I couldnt hear them due to the welding machine
hummin its butt off....
