Max gap for NST should never exceed 0.25 inches.  We usually strive for 
around 0.170 inch max --- beyond this you will start losing NST's because 
they are not designed for this type of work.  A synchro rotary 1800 RPM 4 
pole would give you better output with less strain on your NST.
