The reason that the vacuum is protecting the metal from burning is because of
the lack of oxygen and other combustible gases. If the temperature is
brought to melting point, it will melt, regardless of vacuum or not. Heat is
a form of radiation that needs no medium to travel in. Think of what the
earth would be like if heat could not travel from the sun through the vacuum
of space. Don't feel bad, this is a common misunderstanding of the nature of
heat. Think of heat as a form of light.
