Soulds sorta like a Poulsen arc oscillator (an electric arc, operated in a
hydrocarbon atmosphere within a magnetic field.  The negative impedance
portion of the I-V curve makes for a sort of relaxation oscillator (if you
are lucky).

Jeff - do you have any additional info on that?

Oh - I found a 4-point TIG welder tungsten gap setup, with heatsinks and
insulators at the Dayton Hamfest.  $5.  Hee Hee!  Thats about $70 new.
