Instead of using braid as a breakout, place small "omega" shaped pieces of
aluminum tape on your toroid as breakouts. You can start out with them
forming almost flat places and bow them out a bit ata a time, so that the
sparks tend to start at these spots. This method was pioneered by Richard
Hull, and works very well. By careful positional placement using four or
more of these tape breakouts, you can precisely control the direction of
your big sparks.
