if you really want remote control, why not put in a differential - either
from a piece of machinery or a small car - by letting one of the "wheels" be
the drive to the rotary gap, and either the drive shaft or other wheel be
the motor input, you can adjust the phase accurately by rotating the
remaining "input" by the amount you want - if you connect to it with a piece
of plastic pipe and a worm gear drive you will have excellent isolation and
fine control.  you could even use a window motor to turn it, then you could
have remote electric control - the worm drive on the electric window motor
will hold it in place when you remove power
