It should work fine.  Ignition coils tend to only produce 25 to 35kV when not 
loaded.  When you place a capacitor across one, the charging of the cap can 
load the ignition coil down to 3 - 4kV, depending on the size of the cap.  
You might wish to keep your gap spacing to about 2 - 3 mm (depending on size 
and shape of electrodes) until you have your coil tuned and working well.  
After that, then maybe increase the gap setting a little at a time to improve 
the output.
