NST resonance -at- 50Hz
Not seen comment on the following and would appreciate feedback if my
observations are seen as correct.
Given :
The primary cap (approx 18nF) is designed to have about the same
reactance as the NST source at 50Hz .
The NST ouput reactance is about 500k ohm representing an inductancce of
about 1500 hy.
We have a series resonant cct at 50Hz ( the generator is in series with
L and C)
This arrangment will exhibit Q magnification of the voltage across the L
and C components resulting much more than the source voltage (15kV)
appearing across the cap and the transformer.
Seems to me this process is why its so easy to overstress both the NST
and cap in NST designs.
I've used a sig gen to do a low freq sweep of the primary while
measuring the voltage across the cap and can observe a low Q resonance
at about 40Hz in my own tesla.
Tnx in advance for comment
Best to all Ted L
