  its a type of wire ....    normally used to wind solinoids (sp.?) for
electromagnets
it is a single strand wire with a shellac or varnish style of insulation...
sold
by the pound (sometimes it is found in multiple lb spools)   this stuff is
available in thicknesses from 12gage ( pencil lead thick )  to 40gage (less
than
a human hair thick) ... the common gage used for coiling is 22 gage for low to
medium powered coils. If you are just experimenting, use the inexpensive
stuff    but if you are planning to build for heavy usage try to find " Double
Formvar" wire.  ( it has been double dipped in the insulation e.g. 2 coats of
varnish).
