Re: MMC take2 - DON'T try them!

Christopher

These sound like electrolytics to me - when you say 1399mFd do you mean
microfarads? If they are electrolytic they will be polarised and will be
useless for coiling. Even with a DC coil the RF ringing and kickback
would reverse them and they would go 'poof' or even *BANG* very quickly.
Also they are way too large in value - you'd need to put at least 10,000
in series to get 0.1 uF!!! These sound like smooting capacitors for
switchmode power supplies.

What you want is either to build your own capacitors (look at the coil
building info on the lists www page) or to go for the MMC approach. My
MMC is 10 strings of 7 x 0.047, 2500V Polyproplyene caps. This is the
dielectric, and more the value range you should be looking at.

You seem to be forging ahead rather quickly - I know it's really
exciting and I couldn't wait either, but do take plenty of time to
browse the internet for anything and everything. I spent over a week
just looking and reading before I even touched my toolbox. Look at other
people's designs to give you an idea of sizes, constuction time and
difficulty, techniques and most of all cost. You don't want to go buying
loads of stuff you find out later you can't use and can't sell! Download
a copy of WinTesla (forgotten where it is) and then you can tinker with
a setup without blowing anything to pieces, using this, come to a
starting design for your 4" coil - the program will ask for/tell you the
value of all the components you have/need, the length of wire, the
toroid size etc. And, above all, take care and live longer!

Good luck
