You said about spacers in your plate cap.
I think if you can get some Nylon threaded rod ( M10 ) and nuts
you could vary the spaceing with the nuts and the insulatin properties
of the Nylon would be very good.

Also by being able to move the plates in and out you should be able
to fine tune the cap value to the needs of the coil.

Any thought on this???
