Subject: Solid State Coils - books

Greetings

For anyone else out there who is interested in designing,
switching power suppliers to drive Tesla coils. I've just
found a very helpful book:

Marty Brown: Power Supply Cookbook

I enclose a brief review but basically I would suggest that this book,
along with Daune Bylunds "Modern Tesla Coil Theory" are the must
have books for solid state coiling.

Have fun,

Alan Sharp (UK)

The first UK Teslathon will take place on.
Saturday 30th May, 11am,Corby, Northamptonshire.

UK Teslathon details, soild state coiling, conventional
coiling, UK component sources.....

Marty Brown: Power Supply Cookbook.

This is best book I've found on designing switching power
supplies, it's almost entirely relavant. Of the 230 pages,
pages 25 to 126 are concerned with PWM switching. The
main circuit is built around the MC34025 which is the
Motorola equivalent of the 3825. It includes flyback designs
scaleable from 25 to 150W (probably more) and half bridge
designs (280w example) again scaleable. There is a great
section on designing magnetic elements. Page 128 to 162
introduce quasi - resonant switch supplies, again with
practical examples. The appendices include more on
magnetics and a wire table. It says that it is written for
electronics engineers but I found it quite readable, and
sufficently detailed. It is a cook book - it takes you right
through the whole design process.

I got my copy from Amazon-dot-com (huge US on-line book
seller) for $24 plus $12 P/P, to the UK. I used the mid price
shipping option- air to UK, followed by Post Office, it came
in two weeks. Surface mail from US is incredibly slow - avoid.

BTW Amazon have a massive stock of hard to get books
and a good search engine - US books are slightly cheaper
than UK which makes up for the shipping costs. There is no
custom duty or vat on books.

Other Books I have tried include:

John D.Lenk: Simplified design of Switching Power Supplies
Disappointing as all the examples are low power devices,
readable, well illustrated, lots of low power circuits.
If you want to build a 5W coil this is where to go.

Irving M.Gottlieb: Power Supplies, Switching Regulators, Invertors and
Convertors.
(2nd Edition)
Again this is mostly irrelavant to the application, some circuits
which are almost useful, lots of theory. But the circuits tend to
be low frequency and use bipolars rather than mosfets.
