Mike,
   Some of Tesla's patents for transmission of power through the natural media
used the spiral secondary.  It has the advantage that the high voltage output
is in the center where it is buffered from ground by turns with successively
lower voltages.  He supposedly got good results using this type of secondary.
I want to try this one day myself, but never have enough time to do all I want
to with TC's.  
    I think you should try it.
