Chris,
There are two very good reasons to use a circular primary as I see it.
First, you want to minimize any possible arcover between windings of which
a circular primary promotes. Second, soft copper tubing is readily
available and comes in a circular shape, perfect for shaping a nice
primary.

You could probably get away with a polygon primary. It all depends on
contruction techniques and size of the coil. I'm sure there have been many
good working coils using a polygon arrangement.
