High-voltage low frequency diodes are quite often made by having
internally
many low-voltage diodes in series. That results in quite a lot of voltage
drop. I've seen this "infinite resistance" happen with many diodes.
Looking
up the diode in data book might help. Some diodes have very high voltage
drops: I remember checking one 75kV diode and was a bit supprized to
see it has 95V voltage drop!

Those are still easily tested. Hook one up with a neon xfm and cap. See
if the voltage rises as it should. Variac may help here to keep smoke in
mininum :)
