No I have not tried three in series even though I have three
available. As for putting the third winding in series on each coil I
thought that winding was for the resonant caps? I don't plan on using
the caps on these windings because of reported failures. Even though
they are only about forty dollars each I hate to destroy a good
transformer if I can avoid it.
I'm working on a new coil that has a six inch secondary. But these are
the specs of my old coil.

Secondary: 4" dia.x 18" polystyrene form wound with #24 magnet wire
and coated with two part clear epoxy

Primary: 3/8" copper tubing wound on a 30 degree pitch

Primary capacitor: .015uf flat plate vertical capacitor polystyrene &
polyethylene dielectric (long story!) in a custom made acrylic casing

  Gap: modified cylinder gap

You can see my coil on Chip's webpage.
