Subject: toroid form
Our coil is made with pieces and parts we have around. This is partly
because of a shoestring budget, and partly because we live in a remote
area where electrical stuff is not readily available. Our coil is
working fine.
Thought someone might be interested in a cheap and easy way to make a
small toroid.
We found that the 'noodle' type foam swimming floats work great. They
are available here in Florida at all the discount stores and most of the
drugstores for a couple of dollars. The ones we use are 2 and 1/2 inches
in diameter and about five feet long. I believe they come in larger
diameters also. They are flexible and can be easily cut to the desired
length and bent around. With the flat ends together, secure with
aluminum air conditioning duct tape, available at any of the builders
supply stores. Wrap the form with this tape, leaving about an inch of
aluminum tape exposed on the inner sides across from each other on the
inside of the form, then wrap with plastic electrical tape. We used a
3/4 inch piece of PVC pipe, also covered with the aluminum tape, cut to
span the inside of the form for a forced fit against the inch of exposed
tape on the form. A hole in the middle of the PVC will allow it to
slide up and down on the terminal.
Don't know if this is a really proper way to construct a toroid, but
is is working well for us.
We are picking up a lot of helpful hints from the list and are
delighted it is available.
Safe sparks!
