I think there is a lot of confusion here over the difference between
saturable reactors in the classic sense, and self-saturating "magamps"
Saturable reactors employ a DC mmf bias to vary the inductance of a
series control element, and produce relatively low distortion of the
current passing through them. Magamps, at least of the type mentioned,
operate by going into total saturation and in that sense are somewhat
analogous to SCR's. This stuff is covered pretty well in any Electrical
Handbook.
