neon light vs laser

You are quite correct about the resonance of a laser vs. a neon tube.  I believe that neon tubes depend on the phospohor coating on the inside of the tube for the majority of their light output, but am not sure of the exact mechanism.  Both lasers and neon tubes utilize the effect of raising atoms to a higher energy level, and the subsequent emission of a photon when the energy level drops.

Since lasers are your other hobby, would it be a fair question to ask if you know of any good sites for the hobbyist who would like to build his own?   Parts, supplies, plans, etc.
