You might also use a geiger counter, such as the approx $150 one from Aware
Electronics that hooks up to a PC, that is sensitive to X-rays in
combination with the step wedge technique to determine the x-ray photon
energy.  This would give you a "real time" readout, without having to
develop film.  The mfr of the above counter can supply a calibration curve
of the sensitivity of the geiger tube vs photon energy: I seem to recall
that it peaks at 60 KEV.
