So. I would guess most of the noise comes from the spark gap.

Has anyone here ever tried to noise insulate it, while not preventing
it
from firing normally? How loud is a vacuum gap? I would think it would
be silent. And how loud is the actual arcs leaving the top terminal?

Most of the noise is caused by the discharges leaving the toroid at top,
literally ripping through the air. If you think the spark gaps are
loud,
wait until you get 3, 4 or 5 foot sparks. When I was running my 6" coil
in
the basement with about 48" discharges, most folks who came down to see
it
watched with their hands over their ears. I finally did buy several
sets of
shooter ear muffs for the company to wear. When running outside, it is
not
nearly so bad, but the noise does carry for a long ways.
