Kerry,
"Does the maggie design work well on a small scale such as a table top
size coil? Say maybe less than 1kw? Would a neon survive the strong
coupling? I would like to build a functional model for just
experimenting with. It
does not have to be a spectacular performer. Just a working model."
I built a magnifier powered by a 7500V-at-30mA neon, and was able to get 13
inches out of it. All this being setup on a table too. For longetivity
make sure you use good RF filtering. This same design I later powered
with a 15kV-at-120mA neon to get just over four feet out (with a redesigned
primary-more insulation between the primary and secondary). Let me know
if you are interested in details.
As far as the bipolar magnifier, I can only say that it does sound very
interesting. Perhaps one of the magnifier pros can answer that one.
