I've been using a field strength meter from our EMI lab to determine if my
efforts are value added (in terms of output/tuning). 

My 750VA system produces 300V/M (the max for this meter) at 3 feet.   

If you standardize on a volts/meter at X feet away at Y feet from top of
coil, you could compare apples to apples.

It would be more useful to take enough measurments to complete a 3D field map
on various designs.  Then defined parameters could be used to alter field
shape (or focus) to the desired result.
