That is a lot to explain and if you are extremely familiar with all aspects
of regular coils then you might begin to see what is going on.
A magnifier is a three coil system.
primary
secondary
tertiary, or extra coil
What it is not... is a standard Tesla coil with a third coil!
The primary and secondary are extremely tightly coupled. K>.4 This is
often called the driver system and works very closely to a simple turns
ratio air core RF step up transformer. The spark gap must be very special
and well considered. A common gap rarely performs well in a magnifier system.
The system relies on a balance of parameters, impedance matching, superior
insulating skills and advance electrostatic control in and around the third
coil (resonator).
It is hard to make a good magnifier. What determines good depends on your
view point.
I can count the number of coilers on a single hand who I think have proven
somewhat adept at magnifer construction. With the recent interest in these
advanced systems, I'll have to get the other hand ready soon to keep count.
