Paul,

Consider doing a first layer of gauze or cheesecloth dipped in
plaster-of paris. This material hardens without drying, and quickly, giving
rigidity to the construction in a short time, which will help prevent any
wrinkling caused by dimemsion changes in the tube due to leaks, changes in
temp or barometric pressure. Then finish the tube with many layers of paper
mache.
