Chip,
Put it in a lathe on the slowest speed and use a router (my
method).  This is a two person operation.  One uses the 
router and the other steadys the pipe.  Another option
could be to put the pipe in a square coner of the garage
or wherever and one person turns the pipe while the other
marks a ring around it.  Probably the best is find a lumber
yard with a big radial arm saw, or a contractor with a big
chop saw.  Good luck.
