Ed,
When I started seeing 80KV on the neon during simulations, I
went oh-oh. Then Malcolm mentioned using a series resistor and I went
AH-AH. It's a resonant circuit, dampen it. It's been so long since
I've built any RF circuitry that I've almost forgotten the real world
basics.
Since I've added the resistors, I'm down to very few flash overs on my
safety gaps. Right now I think they are a good compromise between
power and neon life.
