I built my first coil when I was 17. I used neon sign transformers for
power. It was a 4.0" diameter secondary and produced about 12" discharges.
If you are serious about this I would encourage you to read all you can on
the subject. There are many good plans available at:
http://ftp.funet.fi/ftp/pub/sci/electrical/tesla.
As Alan Sharp reccommends, be very careful - the voltages and currents
involved with this project are lethal.
