Hi Ed,
Concerning 1256D Powerstats:

Sure, I've got a book. You can get one yourself very easily. Call
Superior Electric -at- 1-800-787-3532 and ask for them to send you
catalog number P183. This covers most of their variac, including
the 1256D. This book is chocked full of good info.
On the terminal #5; This terminal is used (with #1) for input of 120 VAC
to output 280 VAC. Doing this, Superior Electric claims you can go up to
150 VAC out at full 28 Amps continuous. Above that, they say you have to
derate this unit accordingly. Of course, not very many people are going
to use it in this manner anyway.
