The standard 1/4 wave Tesla coil is a two coil system:
primary/secondary.

The Magnifier system is a three coil system: primary/secondary/
extra coil.

In the standard 1/4 wave Tesla coil system the secondary coil
functions as both the secondary of an air core transformer and as
a 1/4 wave helical resonator.

In the Tesla Magnifier the secondary coil functions only as the
secondary of the air core transformer. The extra coil functions
as the 1/4 wave helical resonator. This division of transformer/
resonator, bridged by an RF transmission line, means much greater
efficiencies of RF power processing can be achieved with Tesla
Magnifiers.
