Skip,
Water is an ideal insulator in its pure state! It is considered an
excellent dielecric! The rub is that word "pure state". Water is a
universal solvent and dissolves everything, almost. It is also a superb
base for electrolytic action and supports lots of free ions within it.
Heroic efforts are required to purify and deionize water to a point of
being a true insulator and dielectric.!
Thus, natural bodies of water are loaded with ions just itchin' to conduct
electricity This is due to water dissolving about a million things in the
environment to source these ions.
Some of the best grounds can be had by using natural bodies of water,
provided a good large surface area is supplied for contact. Needless to say
salt water is the best of all. The more nasty, mineral laden and polluted
the water, the better it is for ground purposes. You will suffer a lot of
corrosion due to the aforementioned electrolytic action and the ground
terminal will require inspection from time to time inorder to maintain the
best ground possible.
Good luck. I wish I had such a ground system outside my door!
