Re: [TCML] Choosing a Secondary Diameter

Hey Mike...

since you seem to be limited to 4,6,8" etc material, go with the 4" dia. Wind about 20" worth of #22 Double Formvar wire. You may want to precoat the tubing with a polyeurathane varnish ( 1 coat) and let dry. This gives the wire something to hold onto when applying the wire. Trying to wind wire on uncoated acrylic can be frustrating if the temp changes too much and you walk in to see that the wire has become loose and slipped down the form....

Very new to coiling and I'm working on getting the basic plans in
shape for a new coil built from some parts I have from my first coil.

I will be winding a new secondary, and would like to size it such that
it is optimized for my transformer, or at least not improperly sized
for my transformer.

It appears that I have easy access to Acrylic tubing from local
manufacturers. Thus the plan is to use Acrylic for the secondary.

This leaves the question. For my transformer, which outside diameter
would be better? 4inch?, 6inch?, 8inch? bigger?
Does the magnet wire chosen change for different coil form diameters?
(or only as much as necessary to hit number of turns vs total
secondary height)

My Transformer is:
Franceformer 12030P
120v NST 12000v 30mA, 360VA

Thanks
Mike
