I personally would use the largest tubing you have
available...ok, up to 1/2 inch anyway.  If your
primary gets warm, then you are losing some of the
primary Q.  I used 3/8 tubing on my 8 inch coil which
never warmed even after long runs.  You can use 1/4
tubing for sure, but 3/8 tubing holds its shape
better.
Never used a strike rail myself either.
