John: Thanks for confirming the approach. Yes, that is how I'll do it. I
won't touch any of the enamel on the part that will not be soldered.
Thankfully I have some really small jewelors files and locking forceps. I
also have a fancy digital solder station I got when I worked for TechAmerica
AKA radioshack-dot-com. Handy. The operating theatre should be in business
around 6PM tonight.
It's a shame I can't bleach the carbon crud off the Plexi. Oh well.

Ted,
Nothing wrong with splicing even for any part of the secondary.
I usually file the wire to a taper on one side, sort of an inclined
plane appearance on both wire ends, then I overlap them. the
inclined planes match up to give a wire that is no thicker than
normal, but have a large soldered contact area. I do not remove
any insulation from the enameled wire. This way the solder only
sticks to the filed (inclined) areas.
