Hey Tom, never say die.  You should be glad you have a 7" spark from your
coil!  You got nowhere to go but up!  I started with a 1" spark from my
first coil, but it is a learning and tuning process.  That is what makes
it fun!  And Terry is right, go with his idea of the foil covered ball. 
It worked for me!  Al
