Al,

You don't need the extra unused turns, but if you want to build a
smaller lighter, more compact coil with the greatest spark output,
this can be done by using the six keys for efficiency:  Relatively
small secondary with many turns of a relatively thin wire, relatively
large capacitor (LTR for a NST coil),  low bps sync gap (120 bps),
many turns in the primary for low gap losses, and a properly sized
smooth toroid.  An example of this design can be seen at:
