Terry,

The "L-Diode" filter is actually a standard DC resonant charging
circuit. Once the main gap initially fires, current in the series
inductor (called a charging reactor) begins to build. Once the gap
quenches, the inductor current then helps re-charge the tank cap. The
resulting series LC circuit formed by the charging reactor and tank cap
result in the tank cap being charged to twice the incoming DC supply
voltage. The diode is there to block the higher voltage on the tank cap
from discharging back to the lower voltage DC supply. A high-frequency
RF choke may also be added between the diode and the main spark gap to
prevent high frequency RF from backing up into the diode and charging
reactor.
