About the 555 timer circuit.Instead of risking the 555 IC, how bout using a 
much easier driver.i got at least 2-3 in. from a small ignition coil using a 
motor start capacitor, some unknown AC power transformer, and a small 
relay.When you connect it right the relay will buzz and i got impressive 
output.Long fire-like sparks.
