Mike,
I know this has been done before, but not by me. :-(
So just because  I don't know what I'm talking about, that doesn't make me 
wrong. :-)
I would try using a husky amplifier of at least 6L6 or 807  size to drive the 
primary of a large plate modulation transformer. The primary impedance of the 
modulation transformer should match the amplifier output impedance. Connect 
the secondary to vary the source as you suggest. 

This is something I want to eventually try. Please let us know what happens.
