Hello Coilers:

I've been following the recent thread on ballasting with interest and
I'd like to suggest something.  Regardless of the type of inductive
ballast used, be it a welder, variac, or whatever, it should be of
interest to see how the line voltage divides between the ballast
and the TC's power transformer primary.

If one where to use two high impedance analog voltmeters, one connected
across the ballast and one across the transformer primary, it might be
very revealing to observe the changes in voltage distribution at various
settings of the ballast.
