Hi All.....
I got my variac installed today into my system and the strangest thing
occured... I am using 4 EI cores wound with approximately 180 turns of
THHN #10 solid copper ... when i tested the units on 240V the 2
smaller units drew 4 and 5 amps respectively the 2 larger units drew
12 and 15 amps ... the wiring goes as follows
240 into a main switch, main switch to the variac inputs, variac outputs
to the inductors and pig ( one leg to the inductors the other leg to the
pig) ...
once i wired everything up i tested the system on a Jacobs ladder ( pig)
the larger inductors pulled the same current ( as the test 12 & 15) but
the smaller units allowed massive amounts of current to flow.... 40 - 60
amps surges... blew the fuse on the variac 3 times during tests..
WHY am I seeing this large surging with the 2 smaller inductors ???
before i installed the variac i had no problem with this surging or hi
current flow...
