I have to admit, I've never seen a dimmer switch with only two wires.  I
wonder how it would work, since the power it receives to run itself would
depend on the size of the load...

 Bzzzt, wrong, thank you for playing.  Those wires are for line (hot in),
common (neutral), &  load (hot out).  If you connect a dimmer right across
the power line (hot, neutral, ground) with no load, you _will_ blow it up.

 Didn't it come with a wiring diagram on the package?  Most of them do.
Many of them also have labels stamped into the plastic of the case.
