Hi Jim,
This is only partially true.
TCs are something special as concerns this matter
becouse voltage can rise during the spark formation
and even reach higher values than those just
suggested by radii of curvature of top electrode.
A rate of its rise is slower than in unloaded spark
condition ,but possible if the energy of bang is
sufficient to mantain this however.
Another thing is the Efield at the suface of electrode
during the sparking.IMO its max. sticks more closely
to ~30kv/cm ,althought some recent single pulse tc
tests brought that in question too .

discussed year ago.
Many questions dealing the problem remain open up-to
date .
Corresponding msms are needed for a further researh on
this.
