don't use resistor wires, as you surmise, the resistor core will dissipate a
significant amount of energy.
... if you want low buck HV wiring, use ordinary scrap house wire and feed
it through vinyl tubing (like tygon(r)). Solid dielectric coax also works
(most cable TV RG59 is foamed dielectric and doesn't work very well). Scrap
network coax, if solid dielectric, works nicely.
